Is the Practice of Writing the Practice of Love and Faith?
These days, I'm willing to give anything a shot
The effort to be a writer is an act of love. It’s an act of faith.
- James Baldwin
I came upon this quote today after another week of deciding that I just don’t have enough hope or love or faith to share my writing with you. In this message, I see a call to action. To practice the act of writing in order to practice the act of love and faith. When we don’t have something, we always have the option to try for it until we do.
I’ve been waiting until I can foster something beautiful inside of me so that I can make something beautiful to share with you. That’s where I’ve gone wrong, the waiting. While I think the world only really deserves prose of positivity right now, and I can only ever be authentic with my shares–and I don’t have much positivity to share–I am here to try anyway.
Most everyone I know is going through a tough time right now. Maybe we can be there for each other. How have you been finding the courage to light your candle? To move through fear, devastation, or heartbreak? What quote, song, practice, or ________ is helping you pick yourself up when you’re down this season?
I turn to you, dear readers, with my offering of James Baldwin’s wisdom. And a promise to keep trying to find the light in all of this dark.
May you cultivate blessings of love and faith this time of year. I cherish you, truly.
A hui ho,
Julia
Thanks Julia. I agree with you that so very many people are "going through a tough time right now" and that's because times are tough and very f***ed up. Hope is not easy to find, just in these small places and these small things that give us a small space for a while, just for a little breathing room. We are all just holding on. KOKO (keep on keeping on)
