Sierra Ridge Drive
The trees are painted in a dusty blue dawn as his dark silhouette rises from a sleep to a stand It hangs there, breathing blinking over blankets Piled in swirls of last night's kisses Lying in bed with her giggle's whispers Is it a dream? The way they so openly speak? He gently pads his way from the bed across the floor Taking the shape of home Making sounds of morning He smooches a big puppy who groans and wakes their sleeping woman who groans and they stretch and they wiggle as they watch their love begin the day
Spring is here, and it is perfect. The crisp air cradles my groggy mornings, and the sun shines so bright it feels like hope (while I read headlines so dark).
I need that now. That seasonal reminder that all things keep turning.
That eclipse season will always come, even if the world is burning.
This Thursday (March 13th) between 11 PM and 5 AM Central, the moon will align perfectly with the Earth and the Sun–passing into Earth’s shadow. It will dim and take on a reddish-orange hue, earning it the name Blood Moon.
The first Blood Moon I ever saw was in Salt Lake City, UT. I knew it was coming, but I didn’t know what to expect and didn’t make any real plans to see it. While crafting and arting and getting up to whatever insomniac shenanigans I’d get up to in my early 20s, I remembered it was happening. It was sometime around 2 AM. I stepped outside onto my attic-turned-apartment’s porch for a cigarette and I was shocked.
Wrapped in a blanket, I reeled back a couple of steps. I might have even stepped all the way back inside to catch my breath before re-emerging, eyes wide as saucers to the sky. It was truly red. Bleeding. Bright. Sort of terrifying. I was in awe. It was so wonderful to be so caught off guard by something that has been happening forever. By something that will happen forever.
For whatever forever means…in the large expanse of what does anything mean?
The next significant Blood Moon I recall, I was in Africa. Producing a pilot for a docu-style environmentalist series that fused adventure sports with causes to bring attention to said causes. To hopefully make people care more about preserving, protecting, and enjoying the spectacular feats of the Earth.
We were white water rafting the Zambezi River in an attempt to stop damming.
Damn those dams.
The night of the Blood Moon, the cries of the animals curdled the clouds. It was heavy. There was an unmistakable chaos in the energy that bounded between my tent and my surroundings.
This year, I’ll be sure to honor this Blood Moon, this first eclipse of the 2025 eclipse season and the first Total Lunar Eclipse since November 2022.
Eclipses are potent catalysts for change.
That change will happen regardless of anyone doing anything. In fact, rituals are not recommended, as eclipse energy is so unpredictable. It is what it is what it is.
I’ll honor this pattern of space and time by contemplating the energies in the sky it activates. With consideration for the cycles it is a part of. Namely, the 18-month South Nodal cycle of Virgo. The same sign in which this eclipse takes place.
This period emphasizes the need to balance Virgo’s analytical and detail-oriented nature with Pisces’s intuitive and spiritual qualities.
We are encouraged to release tendencies toward excessive perfectionism and overanalysis, while the North Node in Pisces guides us toward embracing compassion, creativity, and spiritual connection.
This is both individual and collective.
How might we collectively release, and embrace, and balance the varying attributes of these qualities for a world we want to stand for? To be deep in the trenches of? To love and tend for the inevitable future? How can we create a harmonious inevitability?
South Node’s transit through Virgo from January 2025 to July 2026 underscores a period of releasing limiting patterns related to criticism and control, while the North Node in Pisces invites us to cultivate empathy, imagination, and a deeper spiritual connection.
This Blood Moon further enhances this potent time for change.
Boy, do we need change.
All of this, to me, speaks of forgiveness. To grace and a letting go of indignance.
Gripping onto our hardened edges, hardening them further, and holding out empathy in a misguided effort to protect and defend against each other creates a world of which no one is proud to be a part. The blame game must stop somewhere. The requirement of perfection from our neighbors in their ideals and behaviors allows no room for mutual forgiveness and a much-needed coming together to resolve this disturbed reality in which we all find ourselves navel-deep in.
With the current placement of the stars and planets, the mass and matter, how they move the gas and light and energies between them…
It is a call to balance practical application with devotional dreams.
A time to feel into each of our individual part in the greater scheme.
Maybe your bubble of influence on Earthly or Spiritual matters feels small, but it exists. It is a stitch in the quilt we all share. I hope you own that power. I hope we all do.
In other news!
With the sunny seasons here and my usual natural and health-oriented manner of being, I discovered some new-to-me delights to share.
RAW ELEMENTS
An epic mineral sunscreen that doesn’t leave that weird purple residue so many do. I’ve been using the clear for my tattoos, leaving my bare body skin exposed to absorb much needed Vitamin D, and using the tinted tin for a subtle face pretty-fier. It comes out muchos lighter than it looks, all compacted in the tin, and you can mix it with the clear if you think you need it lighter.
Stoked on this find.
YUMMY FACE SKIN SHIT
I got this rec from a facialist and it is sublime. Hydrating, dewy, impactful. Shit I look good. I hope you find a lot of sunny adventures this season, and if you do you’ll want to stay moist and taken care of. I’m glad I got this baby in my toolbox this season.
MAGNESIUM OIL
Literally, everyone is magnesium deficient if you are not handling it with supplements. Our soil has been stripped of nutrients with the outrageous monocropping strategy going on in AG for so long, and our food is not giving us the much-needed Magnesium we all absolutely need to have a thriving body/mind/spirit. It balances hormones, decreases migraines, plays a role in brain function (which regulates moon and depression), improves digestion (constipated?), increases skin hydration, assists in breaking down sugars and thus managing weight and glucose-associated diseases (which is just near all of them), it supports successful sleep (fatigued?), it is the first thing to address if you are entering the world of self-relient, radically responsible holistic health care.
& the best way to absorb it is, in fact, through your skin. I’ve always struggled to find a reasonably priced lotion or whatever to get mine. BUT NOW with this pregnancy status I am all up in, I’m finding better hacks, with my eyes all bright on anything Mom-related. Introducing: Mother Mother’s Magnesium Oil. Marketed for mothers but obvi excellent for all.
Frick ya, babe.
You’re welcome!
Have a super duper day ;)

Julia
