In 2018, I returned from a Summer program studying physical theater at Dell’Arte International with Olivia, my red-nose clown. This is the beginning of the story about how she came to be.
A warm, yellow glow cascaded from the old lighting fixtures nestled into the short ceiling of the vintage shop. My fingers danced into the folds of the colorful fabrics, enjoying the kiss of each varying texture. The layers of difference creating a sentimental beauty reminiscent of the ensemble theater work that brought me to this small town.
Blue Lake, California.
Our little band of physical theater practitioners played through the space, exploring and enjoying all the nooks and crannies of a night out in society. It was the beginning of our Saturday evening, and having spent two weeks working our booties off on a secluded campus out in the woods, we were buzzing with delight for the unique experience of being out together in the public, consumeristic eye.
I could hear far-off laughter from a familiar smile and the clatter of things touching other things. I let the joy of life sink into my marrow.
Circling the racks, my fingers ran over the selected collection. Not looking for anything; just enjoying the variations and sensations. And then, quite unprovoked, I pulled out a hanger and before me was a darling dress I knew would fit me perfectly. Vintage fits have a flattering structure that most modern wear does not. And this one, this one seemed to know my name.
My fist gathered the skirt in a grip, and I let it go to watch the drapery fall and sway.
The fabric was hefty, and it felt so… real.
It’s quite lovely when clothes feel real.
It was red, with white polka dots.
I slipped it on
and it was perfect.
Tune in next week to catch part two!
And please enjoy this rare taping of a live performance by my clown duo: The Yarnballs. Featuring Olivia and Bluffles!
A hui ho,
Julia
Mahalo nui loa for sharing such a lovely story, Olivia. There must be something in the water of the Mad River. Some real magic happened with that cohort. I can't wait to see what you make next!
Love,
Henry the Clown
